About
Evil Empire began life as a Quake 2 CTF clan back in the day in Perth, Western Australia. Restricted to dialup speeds, Perth had a thriving local gaming scene where LAN meets were common. Gamers would lug their 19″ CRT monitors, just to get those sub 100 pings.
The clan was formed in 1998, although we’d already been playing Quakeworld and Team Fortress (the original) online since they had come out.
evem.org.au also came to life in 1998, and has been online in various forms since. This is actually Mark VI of the site, archives of the other versions can be found on the archives page. The first versions were filled with screenshots and config files. We were dedicated tinkerers trying all sorts of things to reduce modem lag to under 200ms, and the framerates of our low-end video cards to above 30fps.
Back in 2002 I restored some old CDs and wrote a detailed account of the history of Evil Empire.
